Edition #89: I Resigned. The Next Day, I Was Promoted. Here’s What Actually Changed.

Edition #89: I Resigned. The Next Day, I Was Promoted. Here’s What Actually Changed.

The resignation letter was formal.

Signed. Dated. Submitted.

The next day, the call came.

The CEO wanted to see me.

I walked down that corridor with a handover plan in my head.

Timelines. Notice period. Who would take which file.

I sat down ready to talk about leaving.

I walked out having negotiated my next position.

A level up. Wider responsibilities.

My fifth promotion in fifteen years.

It arrived the day after I said I was going.

Now, I want to be careful with this story.

Because it is very easy to tell it wrong.

The wrong version goes: "Threaten to resign and they'll promote you."

That is not what happened.

And it is not what I teach.

A resignation used as a bargaining chip is a bluff.

And the people across the table have seen many bluffs.

So what actually changed in that office?

Not my skills. They were identical to the day before.

Not my results. Same track record. Same reviews.

Not my value. That had been there for years.

What changed was who was holding the decision.

For a long time, my career had sat on someone else's desk.

I waited for the review cycle. For the restructure. For someone to notice.

I was the one who would always stay.

And the person who will always stay is very easy to plan around.

Not out of malice.

Out of convenience.

Think about where an organisation spends its attention.

Retention conversations go to the people who might leave.

Stretch roles go to the people someone is afraid to lose.

The steady performer who never signals anything gets thanked.

And kept exactly where she is.

When I walked into that office, I wasn't asking for anything.

I had already decided I could leave.

And a woman who has decided she can leave sits differently at the table.

→ She doesn't apologise for her number.

→ She doesn't accept "next cycle" as an answer.

→ She hears the offer as one option, not as a rescue.

That was the shift.

Not the letter. The posture.

The day I resigned, I didn't become more valuable. I became harder to take for granted.

Now turn this toward yourself.

Most of the accomplished women I work with are exactly where I was the day before that letter.

Excellent. Reliable. Unquestionably staying.

And so their careers get planned around them, not with them.

You do not need to resign to change this.

You need to take the decision back into your own hands.

One warning, because I care about how you use this.

Never resign in order to be counter-offered.

Mine was real. I had made my peace with leaving. If they had shaken my hand and wished me well, I would have walked out.

And that is precisely why the conversation went the way it did.

A bluff needs them to say no.

A decision doesn't need anything from them.

Before your next conversation upward, do three things:

1. Know your walk-away.

Write down, privately, the conditions under which you would leave. Not as a threat. As a fact you carry into the room. You will feel the difference in your voice.

2. Build one real option.

A conversation outside your organisation. A network you've let go quiet. A plan you've kept in a drawer. An option you never use still changes how you sit at the table.

3. Decide before they do.

Walk in knowing what you want next: the title, the scope, the timeline. Not "whatever you think is fair." Leaders can say yes to a clear ask. They rarely invent one for you.

This is the work I do with every woman inside the Quantum Career Accelerator™.

Not teaching her to leave.

Teaching her to stay or go on her own terms.

Because a career you can walk away from is the only one you can truly negotiate.

So, one question before you close this letter:

If you handed in your notice tomorrow, would anyone be surprised? And what does your answer tell you about who is holding your career right now?

Hit reply and tell me. I read every answer.

And if you're ready to take the decision back, this is the work we do inside my Quantum Career Accelerator™, 1:1. Reply with the word QUANTUM.

That's all for this week.

See you next Tuesday.

Warmly, Nebila
